On the road: The FenCon party crew is doing double duty this weekend. We will be up the road in Oklahoma City for SoonerCon and out to Charlotte, North Carolina, for which is also DeepSouthCon 48. In 2011, FenCon will host DeepSouthCon 49, the first time this long-running Southern Fandom event has been to Texas. Stop by either (or both!) for one of our patent-pending, semi-legendary room parties.

A novel approach:

FenCon
Writers Workshop countdown

Special guest (and Ace editor) Ginjer Buchanan is the instructor for our Writer's Workshop this year where she'll be focusing exclusively on the novel. We only have 3 slots left in the 2010 Writer's Workshop so learn more and reserve your slot right away.

There's an art to this: Congratulations are in order to our FenCon VII Artist Guest of Honor John Picacio on his four Chesley Award nominations. See his nominated work here.

Time's up: Once again we've filled up our Writers Workshop in record time. We're happy to have Ace/Roc editor Jessica Wade running this year's workshop with a focus on the novel. More details coming soon.

Keep Austin weird: We're doing our part by sending the FenCon party crew to ArmadilloCon 32 this weekend (August 27-29) to spread the word about FenCon with another semi-legendary, patent-pending room party. We'll see you there.

Join us: FenCon VII is the place to be this September but first you'll need to buy your membership. Membership prices increase on September 1st so get your membership today.

August 27th

Get a room (fast!): Our hotel room block closes on Friday, August 27th, so make your reservations now. Book at the great FenCon rate of just $92 per night for one to four guests in a king or double standard room. (Suites are sold out.) Call 972-980-8877 and use code FEC to make your reservation.

O Canada: FenCon VII is honored to welcome Robert J. Sawyer as our Special Guest this year. This Hugo- and Nebula-winning author will be with us Sunday only so if you normally get a Saturday-only membership, this is the year you should buy the full weekend. (And if you buy now, it's only a few bucks more than the one-day at the door.)

We've got rhythm: FenCon VII is happy to welcome Jeff & Maya Bohnhoff as our Music Guests of Honor. Maya is an accomplished author and performer with more than 30 years on stage. Together with her husband Jeff, they have been performing their unique blend of filk and parody since 1990.

Do you have FenCon videos or pictures? We are working on a YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/FenConVideo) and now have a Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fencon/). If you would like share your photos or video, please send files or links to info@fencon.org.

Genesis Women's Shelter logo

We love the fen: FenCon's designated charity for FenCon VI was the Genesis Women's Shelter of Dallas, an organization providing quality safety and shelter to battered women and their children in the greater Dallas area. With your purchase of the special Kurt Miller art print and your generous bidding in our charity auction, you helped us raise more than $2500 for this worthy charity.

STARFLEET Region 3 logo

Hailing frequencies: FenCon VI was proud to serve as the host site for the 2009 Starfleet Region Three Summit, a gathering of Star Trek fans from across Texas and Louisiana. We hope everybody enjoyed the extra Trek-flavored programming and that many of the Starfleet members will return in 2010.

FenCon VI in review: What a weekend! Our highest attendance yet. Incredible guests and lots of fun. Thank you to all who attended. Also thanks to the convention staff, volunteers, and hotel folks who made it work. (Need a flashback? Check out the FenCon VI Archive website.) Here are some comments from our guests:

Toastmaster Paul Cornell's report: "It's a slightly unusual mix for a convention: SF; music; science (with NASA guys up from Houston); media. And they take it all equally seriously. It works. And they've got a record number of pre-registrations for next year, so the party's going to be even bigger next time out. I may well pop back just for the fun of it."

Music Guest of Honor Carla Ulbrich: "FenCon is an awesome convention. if you've never been to a science fiction or filk convention, this should be your first."

Angeline Hawkes: "FenCon absolutely rocked this year! Thank you to everyone who made it such an awesome experience! Was fantastic seeing everyone again!"

Lee Killough: "Thanks FenCon. I had a great weekend...enjoyable panels with appreciative audiences, sold some books, signed autographs, connected with friends, met new people. Exactly what should happen at a con!"

Stephen Patrick: "Thanks to everyone for a great time. The panels were a blast, the events were terrific and, as always, it's just plain awesome to get to see everyone every year. Here's looking at 2010."

Kathryn Sullivan: "Thanks, FenCon! I had a great time - lots of good panels and discussions, was able to visit with friends old and new and found good food in the con suite. Thank you!"

Shannna Swendson did a "rundown on the fun that was FenCon"
